‘The views are incredible and shouldn’t be compromised. The design and palette of finishes, colours and furniture respond to the natural environment.’

Currently used as a weekender, the plan is for the house to eventually become the owners’ full-time home. One of the challenges, therefore, was to create a place that, on the one hand, feels relaxed and laid-back, but is also sophisticated enough to work as a permanent residence. It achieves this partly through an unexpected decorating scheme that incorporates meticulously sourced cosmopolitan components, such as Moroccan and African nomadic elements, yet celebrates its beachside location without resorting to holiday home clichés.
Through lighting, rug and furniture placement and selection, the scheme also addresses the challenge of defining intimate and flexible spaces within a house of generous proportions. Practicality was high on the list of the clients’ needs – robust yet elegant surfaces were chosen to withstand the wear and tear of heavy use.
