Originally unattractive and poky, an ’80s harbourfront house, with boatshed, has been transformed into a light-filled, spacious and open retreat that works admirably for a family of five. The project involved a close collaboration between the architect Walter Barda, the designers and the whole family, leading to a scheme that includes everything from quiet spots for reading and spaces for day-to-day family activities to a double-height atrium suitable for the large-scale gatherings frequently held at the house. Flexibility of use has been key to the success of the design, with bespoke linen and glass sliding screens allowing interior spaces to be instantly reconfigured. The neutral tones and natural materials selected for furnishings and finishes are subdued but never bland, and act as a complementary backdrop to the clients’ collection of colourful artwork.
